Februar 1916.
On 11 January, 1916, during the First World War, "Appam" was captured at sea off Madeira, by the infamous German raider "Möwe". The "Appam" was carrying £2million in gold and had 40 German prisoners aboard taken in the Cameroons. Military personnel on "Appam" were taken prisoner aboard the "Möwe" and a German crew took over the "Appam," sailing to the neutral USA and claiming the vessel and the gold as war-prize.
